Yasiel Puig’s Benching Not a Big Deal
- Updated: May 25, 2016
Today we should all be talking about how the Dodgers have won three straight and how the bullpen hadn’t given up a run since Luis Coleman gave up a run in the 7th inning in that 17 inning game but instead everyone wants to talk about Puig, how did we get here?
Well, the Dodgers went into the bottom of the 6th with a 3-2 lead after Bolsinger struck out 6 batters and was replaced by Luis Avilan, who got the final out of the inning. So far so good.
Then the bottom of the 6th hit and Dodgers fans lost their minds when after an Adrian Gonzalez ground-out, Trayce Thompson double and Joc Pederson walk, Puig hit a long fly ball to deep right-center that looked like it was going out but instead hit off the wall and Puig, who should’ve been running from the crack of the bat, watched it until it hit the wall turning what should’ve been a double into a 371 ft single.
Luckily is gaff didn’t affect the outcome of the game nor did it lead to him not scoring, as he wound up coming home on an error later in the inning. Howeer, when it was time for the top of the 7th Puig was notably absent in right-field, replaced by Thompson with Howie Kendrick, who pinch-hit for Avilan going to left-field. So, of course everyone is talking about what happened…but Puig himself understood why it happened and was apologetic.
“I thought it was a home run, and I didn’t run out the ball obviously,” Puig said. “It was his decision to take me out of the game. It was a decision that I understand. It was a decision well-made, because my teammates are out on the field working hard, on the field. I should have run out that ball.”
And Roberts clearly has a good relationship with Puig

So, let’s not let this get any bigger than it is and overshadow the fact that the Dodgers just recorded their third straight win.
In other news, Puig’s been hitting well lately. (the walks are no good but he’s getting hits and hitting the ball really hard).
Yasiel Puig is hitting .320/.346/.440 in the last 7 days. He has 8 hits, 4 runs, 1 HR, 5 RBI, 7 K, 0 BB in 26 PA.

Oh, and a little PSA:
Remember to always say Luis Avilan to the tune of Feliz Navidad
