World Cup Of Hockey Rosters Include Kings And Ducks Players

Yesterday the general managers in charge of each team announced the initial 16 players named to their rosters for the upcoming World Cup of Hockey.  Here is a list of players from both the Los Angeles Kings and the Anaheim Ducks that were selected to the rosters of their respected country and team.

Los Angeles Kings

Jonathan Quick – Goalie – Team USA

Anze Kopitar – Forward – Team Europe

Jeff Carter – Forward – Team Canada

Drew Doughty – Defense – Team Canada

Anaheim Ducks

Frederik Andersen – Goalie – Team Europe

John Gibson – Goalie – Team North America

Sami Vatanen – Defense – Team Finland

Ryan Kesler – Forward – Team USA

Ryan Getzlaf – Forward – Team Canada

All teams have until June 1st to name the remaining seven players to complete the 23 man rosters.  There is talk that Team Canada general manager Doug Armstrong (who has Kings’ assistant GM Rob Blake as his assistant) may still be interested in selecting Anaheim’s Corey Perry and the Kings’ Tyler Toffoli and/or Jake Muzzin. Only time will tell.  No word right now if Team USA GM (and LA Kings’ emperor) Dean Lombardi is thinking (or torn) in selecting Kings’ Captain Dustin Brown, Trevor Lewis and/or defenseman Alec Martinez to the team as well or not.  Team North America has also been giving Tanner Pearson a look.

The World Cup of Hockey will take place later this year in Toronto, ON Canada at the Air Canada Centre between September 17th to October 1st with the final being a best of 3 series and is run by both the NHL and the NHLPA.  The last World Cup of Hockey took place in 2004 and was won by Team Canada (and put together by Hall of Famer and LA Kings’ Legend Wayne Gretzky and had current LA Kings’ player Vincent Lecavalier on it’s roster),

and before that in 1996 which was won by Team USA (which had future former King Adam Deadmarsh on it’s roster and was led in net by Quick’s idol Mike Richter).

The World Cup is the continuation of the old Canada Cup tournament that started in 1976 and continues the “Best on Best” competition format that the Canada Cup was famously known for and that has been showcased more recently at the Winter Olympic games from 1998 to 2014.  Now with the World Cup of Hockey back and in full effect, there is no word on if the NHL and NHLPA will still allow it’s players to participate in the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

On behalf of CaliSports News, I would like to congratulate all the players that were honored by being selected to play for their country and not only will represent their home nations but also the Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks and Southern California! Congrats everyone, make us proud!
