What Should The Lakers Do at the Trade Deadline?
- Updated: February 17, 2016
With the trade deadline less than 48 hours away should the Los Angeles Lakers make a move? For some teams the NBA deadline is extremely busy and impactful.
We saw yesterday the Orlando Magic decided to part ways with Tobias Harris as they acquire Brandon Jennings and Ersan Ilyasova. The Charlotte Hornets also acquired Courtney Lee. All three teams who have made move so far are trying to take a bump in order to make the playoffs.
We all know the Lakers are not going to the playoffs so what should they do? For starters we need more assets. If they are going to be a free agent destination I feel they need to acquire young players or draft picks.
I think a player like Brandon Bass who has proven he is a strong locker room presence and is very capable of hitting the midrange shot has some value on the market. I would like to see him get moved in order to get another pick of some sort for this year’s upcoming draft.
Even if the pick is a second rounder we can use that pick to help strengthen the D-League system. In baseball if you look at the teams that have been able to rebuild their franchise it starts with a strong minor league and you can make trades or bring people up from there.
Jordan Clarkson was in our D-League system last year and was able to blow up and become a more than capable starter.
With the Lakers lacking pieces other than D’Angelo Russell, Julius Randle, and Clarkson, Williams is one of the players that could have value on the market. Williams is coming off a season in which he won the sixth man of the year award and is averaging 15 points a game this season.
If there is a team that is looking for an additional punch off the bench in scoring Mitch Kupchak may get a few phone calls about Williams. Again I believe the more young assets and first round draft picks the better so if there’s a way they can get a first round pick for Williams I’d strongly consider it.
Swaggy P is a capable shooter but is immaturity is a turnoff to a lot of teams across the league. At the same time teams that are seeking outside shooting for their bench can give Young a look. For years I’ve considered Charlotte a possible suitor for Young but with their recent addition of Lee it’s not really necessary to add Young now.
Eric Pincus of Basketball Insiders reported some of his thoughts on the Young.
If there’s a return for Nick Young, sure, but is there? No reason to give up assets to move him https://t.co/4BA2RrrCnq

Pincus believes the market for will most likely be low so if the Lakers want to get rid of him they might have to sweeten the deal somehow.
Roy Hibbert is another name that could get moved but with his contract expiring at the end of the year it may be better for the Lakers to just ride out these next 30 games or so and let him walk in free agency.
The deadline is coming fast and we’ll have to wait and see if the Lakers make any moves.
