What Should The Lakers Do At The Deadline?
- Updated: February 5, 2018
As the trade deadline inches closer the questions seem to become more foggy than clear for the Los Angeles Lakers. The club currently sits at 21-31 on the season, good for 11th in the Western Conference, 6.5 games back of the Denver Nuggets.
It’s no secret that Rob Pelinka and Magic Johnson have desires to shed salary cap space and bring in star power but the question is at what cost. Los Angeles already gave away former number two overall pick D’Angelo Russell in order to get rid of Timofey Mozgov. They still have former Duke star Luol Deng on the roster who has played just 1 game this season but is making 17 million dollars.
Julius Randle has proven he has the ability to play bully ball and is averaging a career-high 14 points per game despite playing a career low in minutes per game. Randle will become a restricted free agent this summer.
Jordan Clarkson has provided depth on a young Laker team but he’s on the books for 11+ million dollars over the next two years. This doesn’t necessarily help the plan of having max cap space for two players.
But what does all this mean? Will the Lakers try and get rid of these guys in the name of saving money? Or will they hold on to this players in the hope to continue to develop talent? Is there anyone out there that will fit the long-term and short-term plan of Pelinka and Johnson by the trade deadline?
Only time will tell.
