What Happened To The Rams In Super Bowl LIII?
- Updated: February 13, 2019
We’re still stunned by the results of the Super Bowl LIII and what happened to the Los Angeles Rams. There are several factors and many questions needed to be answered.
We all know the factors coming into this game, the Patriots are coming into this game for the third straight season and with Bill Belichick and Tom Brady‘s reputation we all knew the odds were against the Rams. Last season’s loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl just seemed like the Patriots were done. This looked like the perfect time for the Rams to upset the Patriots for the second straight season. We just have to give credit for what the Pats did in this game.
In the two weeks to prepare for New England, the Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips should have concentrated more on utilizing his front four to put more pressure on Brady.
This formula worked to perfection in last year’s game for the Eagles.
Did Head Coach Sean McVay leak too much information to Bill Belichick during texting each other? Maybe, who knows. At the end of week four, the Patriots were 2-2, the Rams were 4-0 averaging 33 points per game. There were speculations on these conversations, but Belichick got more intel from these talks.
Todd Gurley? Todd Gurley? Where was he? If he was hurt and wasn’t able to play, we can live with that fact. Was this similar to the same situation with Malcolm Butler and the Patriots in last year’s Super Bowl? Belichick benched his best defensive player in the loss. Gurley looked very disinterested and had the look of a player with one foot out the door. McVay explained later that he wanted CJ Anderson more involved in the gameplay. Maybe there were hostile feelings about the move between Anderson and Gurley, we will never know.
It all comes down to one thing, Brian Flores. Yes, Belichick gets all the credit, but the defensive gameplan goes to Flores. Jarred Goff was completely shut down in the biggest game of the year. Without Cooper Kupp the Rams offense wasn’t the same. Flores knew that making Goff uneasy was the key to victory with multiple zone coverage packages on the Rams receivers. Brandon Cooks had several plays that could have changed the outcome of this game, but Flores’s calls and some big defensive plays led to the 30-point reduction of the Rams offense.
Let’s just face the facts, the Rams are now 1-3 in Super Bowl appearances. The team has now lost to teams either starting or ending their dynasty’s. In Super Bowl XIV the Pittsburgh Steelers were coming to the end of their dominant run, ending the 70’s with their four titles in the decade. New England started their run of six titles in 2001 against the Rams when they were in St. Louis.
Super letdown? disappointment and concerns of the way they lost this one and will this be helpful or hurtful? Los Angeles Rams fans expected just a better performance and a better game.
