Weekly Wrap-up: Reign Must Win Tonight

The Reign is up against the wall now. Tonight the Ontario team hosts the San Diego Gulls, down two games to one in a best of five series for the Calder Cup.

A 3-1 loss on Friday night at the Valley View Casino Arena put them in the hole, and now it’s time to push this series to game five on Tuesday night.

In the loss, the Reign outshot the Gulls 39-28 (including 13-6 in the third), but gave up two late third period goals, including and empty net shot. Ontario’s lone goal came from Mike Amadio (from Sean Backman, T.J. Hensick) his second of the playoffs at 9:30 of the first.

The third period also saw the Reign kill off a 5-on-3 Gulls powerplay. However, the back-breaker came at the 18:27 mark when Gulls forward Nic Kerdiles got the puck at the right-wing circle and slapped it past Jack Campbell who made 24 saves on 26 shots on the evening.

Through the Reign Insider, coach Mike Stothers said, “It always comes down to the details. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing it’s details. If there’s under two minutes to play or whatever or you’re in overtime. It’s details. The team that executes and pays attention to the fine details of the game, usually they find a way to win.”

Game 4 is tonight, May 1 at 7 p.m. at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
