Weekly Wrap-up: Reign and Gulls Playoff Tied 1-1

The playoffs are here, and if the first two games are any indication, this series promises to be a doozy.

Reaching for the AHL Caulder Cup, the Pacific Division rivals – San Diego Gulls and Ontario Reign – faced off against each other, with each taking one game last weekend.

On the Friday 3-2 Reign victory at the Valley View Casino Arena, Jonny Brodzinski scored with 11 seconds to go in the third period on a remarkable play that had the Gulls announcer call the play this way: “oh nooooooooo!” Reign forward Adrian Kempe tracked down the puck in the corner, stealing it and centering it to a hovering Brodzinski, who tipped it past Jhonas Enroth for the game winner. Oh nooooo! But oh riiiiight!

It was Brodzinski’s second goal of the game. Goalie Jack Campbell made 32 saves on 34 shots, including a flurry of chances in the third. He kept the Gulls at bay up until the last 11 seconds in regulation. That’s one victory, with two more needed in this best-of-five series.

The next day, the Gulls would have its day. And it only needed the first five minutes of the game. Two first period goals by the Gulls’ Nick Sorensen was all the team needed to take game two, 2-1. The lone goal for the Reign came from Mike Amadio. Both teams tallied 24 shots, and this included nine third period shots by a Reign team fighting hard to tie the game. It was not to be. Series tied 1-1.

The series continues at 7 p.m., Friday, April 28 in San Diego. That’s almost a week of tic-toc, tic-toc.

Through the Reign Insider, coach Mike Stothers said, “The fact that there’s a few days between Games 2 and Games 3, maybe it helps us, maybe it benefits us. Maybe it benefits them. I don’t know. Whether you play every other day or you play the way it is, it’s not an excuse, you just get ready to go.”

And what is needed for a win in game three? Said Stothers, “Score more goals.”
