Weekly Reign Wrap-up: Team Splits With Roadrunners
- Updated: January 8, 2018
Splitting games against the first-place Tucson Roadrunners last week, the Ontario Reign continue to hover over the last place in the Pacific Division – in sixth place at 16-14-1-1, 34 points and a 0.531 “winning” percentage. The good news is they are only .101 percentage points out of first place and get another shot at the Roadrunners at 7 p.m., Friday, January 12 at the Citizen’s Bank Arena.
In last week’s action, the Reign lost 4-3 in the January 5 meet-up with the Roadrunners in Arizona. Before a puny crowd of 4,281, the Reign pulled ahead 2-1 at the end of the first – on the strength of goals by Matt Mouson and Justin Auger – only to fall behind 4-2 towards the end of the third. A goal by Paul LaDue with 44 seconds to go was too little too late. Goalie Cal Petersen (8-7-0) took the loss saving 31 of 35 shots.
A day later, the Reign would exact its revenge. In front of an even punier guest list of 3,693, a strong Reign offense racked up six goals on 29 shots, including star-of-the-game Michael Mersch’s 12th of the season (pictured above), and a goal by LaDue ten seconds into the second period. The winning goal came from Mike Amadio, December’s player of the month, at 11:05 of the second. Jack Campbell (8-7-2-0) got the win, saving 30 of 33 shots.
Now that the Reign knows how to beat those rascal Roadrunners, let’s invite them over to our house. Say Friday, 7ish?
