Weekly Reign Wrap-up: Team Splits Weekend With Gulls
- Updated: February 20, 2018
Well, it finally had to happen. The San Diego Gulls, riding high off its 8th straight win in its 5-2 victory last Saturday versus the Ontario Reign, took a loss. And good news for the good guys – it was against the same Reign, same score, this time on Sunday and this time with the Reign taking it.
Right now Ontario, at 24-17-2-3 with 52 points, is in fifth place in the tightly bunched-up Pacific Division. The next game is against the San Jose Barracuda at 7 p.m., Wednesday, February 21 at the Citizens Bank Arena.
In the first 5-2 game, the one the Reign lost, the team found itself down 4-0 early in the second. Two consecutive goals, from T.J. Hensick and Philippe Maillet, made it interesting before the Gulls scored with three seconds left in the second. No scoring in the third spelled the end for the Reign and the continuation of a winning streak for the Gulls. Goalie Jack Campbell saved 27 of 32 shots in the loss.
The next day the match came to Ontario, with opposite results. Five different scorers for the Reign – Matt Luff, Matt Moulson, Justin Auger, Spencer Watson, and Andrew Crescenzi – gave Ontario the win. Goalie Cal Petersen, saving 22 of 24 took the victory … in the victory, which was a great chance to stop the Gulls and get Ontario going in the right direction.
