Weekly Reign Wrap-Up: 2 out of 3 Ain’t Bad
- Updated: December 19, 2017
Working to stay out of the basement of its division, the Ontario Reign took two out of three for the week. The team was victorious the first game of the week 4-2 against the Texas Stars, won in overtime 4-3 against the Stockton Heat and then took a step back losing big 6-1 against the Tucson Roadrunners.
Ontario, at 12-11-0-1 and 25 points, are two points out of the basement in the Pacific Division, and next get a chance at the step forward at 7 p.m., Wednesday, December 13 against the Texas Stars at the Citizens Bank Arena.
In last Wednesday’s victory against the Stars, Ontario got scores from Paul LaDue, Mike Amadio, Kevin Gravel and Sam Herr, two of which were on the power play. The game was close going into the third when the Reign pulled away with goals, including an empty-netter.
In the Friday overtime victory against the Heat, the Reign couldn’t capitalize on five power plays, but an overtime score at 1:21 from Brett Sutter, recently nominated as captain for the All-Star Classic, was the deciding factor. Amadio, LaDue, and Matt Luff also found the back of the net in the victory.
Next comes the doozy. Saturday’s shellacking by the Roadrunners saw only one goal from the Reign, on forward Michael Mersch’s ninth of the season in the third period. At that point, the score was a reachable 2-1. However, four unanswered goals spelled doom for the Reign and set in motion some more to work on moving forward in the season.
