Weekly Reign Wrap-up: Rival Red Hot Gulls on Horizon
- Updated: February 17, 2018
The rival San Diego Gulls are on fire, with a seven-game winning streak. That team is percentage points out of first place in the Pacific Division. It’s next opponent? Why sure the Ontario Reign at 7 p.m., Saturday, February 17 in San Diego, then another match-up the following day in Ontario. The Reign – at 23-18-3-1 and 50 points – can help its cause by taking this “freeway series,” as the team is in fifth place looking to secure a playoff spot.
(Note: In this case, the “freeways” are in order: the 60 to the 57 to the 5, unless you take 60 east to 15 to 163 to the 8.)
Last week, the Reign went 1-1-1-0, losing 3-2 to the basement Bakersfield Condors Friday, February 9, then losing 6-5 to the same basement dwellers in OT the next day, and finally beating the Eisbären Berlin 6-3 in an exhibition game. (Got a feeling that latter game doesn’t really come into play in this season’s standings.)
In last Fridays loss, Jack Campbell saved 23 of 26 shots, the Condors scored three goals to start off the game, while the Reign could only muster two goals, one each from Andrew Crescenzi and Jordan Subban
The following day was a bit more exciting as Ontario’s Philippe Maillet scored with 35 seconds in the third to push the game into overtime. However, the Condors scored with 16 seconds left in OT to take the game 6-5. Campbell replaced Cal Peterson in net in the third period. They joined forces to give up just too many damn goals in the loss.
In the Tuesday exhibition game, the visiting Berlin was no match for the Reign, as the team notched goals from six different players, and the goalie duo of Campbell and Peterson split duties to preserve some face for the week.
Upcoming will be the real test against the red-hot rival Gulls. No matter what freeway you take.
