Warriors Thrash Clippers In Season’s First Showdown

The narrative going into the Los Angeles Clippers versus Golden State Warriors matchup Monday night was defense against offense. The Clippers, leading the NBA in points allowed per game going into Monday had used their effort on that end of the floor to get them off to a hot start and a 4-1 record. Meanwhile the volume shooting offense of Golden State had struggled to get going early this season and put them at a ho-hum 4-3.
It’s almost as if we all forgot that this is the NBA and offense still rules the roost. Golden State provided a reminder of that at Staples Center.
Los Angeles was able to keep the game close early. Trailing by just 6 after one quarter, the hot shooting of Danilo Gallinari kept his team in it. All of that changed in the second. Steph Curry and Kevin Durant began to find their stroke from beyond the arc and that almost always spells doom for their opponent. Golden State was able to stretch their lead to 17 by half and it never got much better from there for the Clippers.
Curry would go on to score 31 in this one, going 7-11 from three-point range. Equally as impressive, his teammate Kevin Durant wasn’t far behind on the statsheet. Durant closed out his impressive performance with 19 points, going 7-11 from the field.
The struggles for Los Angeles defensively seemed to transfer right over to the other side of the ball. The Warriors doubled Blake Griffin for the majority of the game and forced him to look for teammates more often than he would’ve liked. With the great season Griffin has been having so far this performance stands out, but not in a good way. He finished up this game with 16 points, and 4 assists but the assist to turnover ratio for Griffin wasn’t great as he also turned the ball over 4 times.
The lone bright spot for the Clippers came from Gallinari. Danilo was knocking down shots early and he seemed to find a rhythm getting 19 points and 4 assists.
The Warriors continue to dominate the Clippers and went on to win this matchup 141-113, giving them their 11th consecutive victory over their in-division foes.
The Clippers next matchup will be against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday. This game will take place on ESPN at 7:30 PST.
