After the flurry of offseason acquisitions by general manager A.J. Preller, the Padres enter Spring Training with at least six big league outfielders: newcomers Matt Kemp, Wil Myers, and Justin Upton, and holdovers Carlos Quentin, Will Venable, and Cameron Maybin. With nine (!) outfielders currently on their 40-man roster, and three non-roster invitees, Preller must quickly whittle from twelve to four, or at most, five.
Let’s focus our un-crowding on the six most likely big leaguers; no disrespect to Abraham Almonte or Rymer Liriano, but they are odd men out on the Padres roster, barring a sudden rash of injuries before Opening Day.
