Tyson Ross is coming off his best season as a pro. He made the All-Star team for the first time. He won double digit games for the first time. He almost pitched 200 innings. It was an all-around great for Mr.Ross. So far this year, he hasn’t found that same sort of success.
Last night Ross picked up his first loss of the season. He pitched 5 innings and allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, but walked four batters. He threw 106 pitches, 59 strikes and struck out 7. The box score will tell you that his only blemish was the two run shot that he gave up to Corey Dickerson. But the early season struggles go beyond the box scores.
Ross has been unable throw past 6 innings so far this season. Whether you want your starter to go deep in the game in April is your preference but even the Padres wanted him to go deeper in the game he’s shown the inability to do so.
In four games this season Ross is 1-1 with a 3.97 ERA . Last year he post a 2.81 ERA and the Padres will need him to return to that kind of form if they want to contend down the stretch in the competitive NL West.
Is there cause for concern right now? No. But it something to look for if he’s still struggling come June and July. We all hope he’ll get back on and track and that the slow start is just him getting a feel for this season.
