Turner Kisses Strasburg’s Winning Streak Goodbye, Dodgers Win 6-3
- Updated: July 22, 2016
In June the big Stephen Strasburg–Clayton Kershaw matchup was supposed to happen. Vin Scully even fought through a sore throat to try to witness the two best aces in the game. Sure enough Strasburg would be out with a sore neck and it became another day at the park.
Fast forward to Thursday, Kershaw was hurt and the undefeated Strasburg’s work became a little more cut out. That was until Justin Turner ignited the Dodgers offense with two home runs (both off Strasburg) and the Dodgers held on to win 6-3 to take the season series and give Strasburg his first loss of the season.
In the first inning the Red Dream got a belt high fastball that he drove into the left field bleachers. Later in the third inning, he would strike again. After Howie Kendrick extended his hitting streak to 13 games, on a 3-0 count Turner swung at a chest-high fastball that cleared the centerfield wall to make it a 4-1 Dodgers lead.
Dodgers rookie pitcher Julio Urias who got the start was effective. Despite going only four innings, the growth showed by keeping his pitches in the zone and adding a changeup into the mix to keep the Nationals off-balance. The key was commanding the strike zone and Urias while striking out four did not allow a walk on 75 pitches.
The bullpen meanwhile was effective once again giving up only two runs in five innings pitched. Adam Liberatore got the win by coming into the eighth and struck out Danny Espinoza and Trea Turner. Jansen would come in the ninth inning and get his 28th save of the season.
Notes:
Adam Liberatore has been nearly unhittable in the past two months and hasn’t allowed a run in his past 27 appearances.
Yasiel Puig who entered the game in the seventh inning to bat on a double-switch, came up hobbling on his left hamstring while running out a groundball.
Dodgers reliever Chris Hatcher who is dealing with a strained oblique was transferred to the 60-day DL as first reported by SportsNetLA’s Alanna Rizzo.
Besides the injury bug manager Dave Roberts now says the Dodgers stomach virus has infected the clubhouse that has already hit Corey Seager. The latest victim was catcher Yasmani Grandal who inactive for today’s game. Meanwhile Chris Taylor replaced Seager who missed his third straight game.
