8 – Dustin Brown – 2003 to present

I probably would have had the former Captain, (to me he’ll always be “The Captain), higher up in the list, but due to some poor campaigns after the 2013-2014 Cup victory, “Brownie” has dropped off a bit from this list. Still, his contributions to the Kings and the Kingdom as a player and it’s Captain cannot be ignored or understated. A Mark Messier Leadership Trophy award winner in 2014 and a top 3 leader in overall hits in the NHL from 2007 to 2012, (he was first in 2007-08 with 311 hits), and in the Top 15 for hits from 2012 to 2016, Brown became the first Kings’ Captain in franchise history to lift up the Stanley Cup in 2012. Something that “The Great One” Wayne Gretzky, Rob Blake and Dave Taylor were not able to accomplish. He then did it again in 2014, making him the first American born Captain to lead his team to two Stanley Cup victories, (Dallas’ Derian Hatcher was the first American born Captain to lift the Cup in 1999). Brown also co-lead the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs with 20 points with teammate (and bestie) Anze Kopitar, becoming a major contender for that year’s Conn Smythe Trophy for playoff MVP, especially during the first two rounds where Brown was scoring or setting up big goals or destroying anything and everything that dared to move in his path, (just ask Henrik Sedin or Roberto Luongo about that). Brown also scored some important and timely goals during the second Cup run including scoring the double-overtime winner with an excellent tip-in in game 2 and a highlight reel beauty of a goal when Brown deked out the so-called King, Henrik Lundqvist out of his goalie shorts after a breakaway in game 3 of the Cup Final! Brown seems to be having a resurgence this year so here’s to hoping that he can climb his way back up to a higher overall ranking, but if not, no worries because whether he wears the ‘C’ on his chest or not, his championship legacy with the Kings is already set in stone.
