8 – 2014 Western Conference Quarterfinal – “The Comeback” – Los Angeles Kings vs San Jose Sharks
The Kings looked like they didn’t belong. They looked like they couldn’t hang. They looked overrated. It looked like their 2012 Stanley Cup victory was a fluke. That is what most people were saying after the Kings went down 0-3 to the Pacific Division and California rival San Jose Sharks. They couldn’t have been more wrong. Instead the Kings did indeed belong. They could do more than just hang. It wasn’t them that were overrated and not only was the 2012 Stanley Cup victory not a fluke but it wasn’t even the last one the Kings would win either as the Kings made history and came back by winning 4 straight games to eliminate the San Jose Sharks and become the 4th team in NHL/Stanley Cup history to come back from an 0-3 game deficit and win. A task so difficult, rare and nearly impossible to accomplish that 2 teams in this year’s playoffs had opportunities to do the same thing (Ottawa against Montreal in the first round and Montreal against Tampa Bay in the second round) and both of those teams ran out of gas by game 6 and got eliminated. Crushed by an embarrassing defeat, the Sharks haven’t been the same since as they also missed out on this year’s playoffs and recently fired long time head coach Todd McLellan (who is now coaching in Siberia, I mean Edmonton). As historical as this comeback and series win was for Los Angeles, it was only the tip of the iceberg for these Kings as they still had some more magical tricks up their hockey jersey sleeves and in true epic Hollywood fashion, ended up taking the most risky and dangerous route to paradise ever … and conquering it.
Very well written and uplifting to read . Thank you Jeff !

Great work Lori! I love the rundown and agree. I’m not sure who is available for free agency on defense, but that’s definitely an area that should be addressed with the retirement of Regehr and possible split from Voynov with his legal issues. I liked what I saw from McNabb, and I have always loved McBain since his days in Carolina. However, I think parting with McBain for another key defensive piece via trade or whatever may be a good idea.
