The Brooklyn Days

The team that we now know as the Los Angeles Dodgers was originally founded as the Brooklyn Atlantics in 1885. They were a founding member of the National Association of Base Ball Players in 1857. Throughout the years the Dodgers would go thru many name changes including the Brooklyn Bridegrooms, Trolley Dodgers, the Superbas, and the Brooklyn Robins, before finally settling on the Dodgers in 1932.

The history in Brooklyn is legendary throughout sports history. In 1955, the Dodgers finally won their first championship behind players such as Gil Hodges , Pee Wee Reese, Johnny Podres, and Duke Snider. In 1958 the Dodgers along with the Giants left New York and relocated to the West Coast. Since the move West the team has won championships in 1959, 1963, 1965, 1981, and 1988.

In the history of the franchise 60 players who have played for, managed, or coached in the Dodgers system have been inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. Names such as Koufax, Drysdale, and Ruth have all worn the Dodgers blue colors. Babe Ruth signed on as a Dodgers base coach in 1938 which would turn out to be the last baseball uniform The Babe would ever wear. When the Dodgers first arrived in Los Angeles they played their home games in the Los Angeles Coliseum until Dodger Stadium was finished on April 10, 1962.

The franchise has retired 10 numbers. During the years in Brooklyn the Dodgers would have quite a list of characters who would wear the Dodgers blue. Men such as Dazzy Vance, Zack Wheat, Fat Freddie Fitzsimmons to name a few. Affectionately known as the Bums the Dodgers teams during the Brooklyn years would leave the fans of this team heartbroken on more than one occasion. And 2 years later Walter O’Malley would break the hearts of every fan in Brooklyn 1 final time when he moved the team out West to California. Along with the Dodgers the New York Giants would also leave for the West Coast. Over 60 years later the people of Brooklyn have never forgotten what Walter O’Malley had done to them.
