Should Jeremy Lin Be The Lakers Starting PG?
- Updated: October 16, 2014
What would the Lakers be without having a box office player? Jeremy Lin is a Laker after being shoved out of Houston when the Rockets decided that a chance at a “Big 3” was more important than keeping their core together. Lin is something completely different from what the Lakers are accustomed to having a point guard position.
Lakers fan were excited as can be when they traded for Steve Nash just three summers ago. Nash was going to be the best point guard the Lakers had since the Magic Johnson days. After coaching changes and age catching up to him, Lakers fans may never seen the MVP Steve Nash again.
After Nash missed most of last season with numerous injuries, the Lakers had to do something. That something was brought in Jeremy Lin. The question remained who would be the starter?
Early reports stated that if Nash was healthy he would start… keyword being if. With the latest Nash injury it looks as if the Lakers will have an easier time naming Lin the starter. Click here to here about Steve Nash’s freak injury.
“I have no doubt in my mind if I went to Steve tomorrow and said, ‘I’m going to start Jeremy, and the games you’re available we’re going to bring you off the bench,’ ” Scott said. “He’s such a professional that I don’t think it will be a problem whatsoever. He just wants to help the team win as much as he can. That’s not a concern of mine. But we haven’t talked about it.”
I believe that Jeremy Lin should start for Lakers for a number of reasons. For one, he’ll actually be the floor for 82 games. At age 26 Lin has fresh young legs, and if he plays well can be the Lakers starting PG for years to come. Second of all, Lin is constantly on the attack. If anyone hasn’t noticed the Lakers are exactly a powerhouse on the offensive end. Other than Kobe Bryant there isn’t a really reliable scoring option. Lin is someone who constantly puts pressure on the opposing defense, and with Kobe drawing most of the attention Lin should be able to strive.
Baxter Holmes of ESPNLosAngeles.com was able to ask Byron Scott and Lin about the situation. This is what Lin had this to say about the starting situation.
“Whatever position [Scott] calls me to, I’ll do my best. It doesn’t change that much to me. No question I want to be a starter. But it’s one of those things that game by game it changes so much.”
The Lakers season is just around the corner and they will have to name a starter sooner or later. I believe Jeremy Lin should be that guy.
