Schmid, Galaxy Making Moves

Galaxy

It’s been a busy off-season for LA Galaxy and their manager Sigi Schmid. Schmid knew he was in for an adventurous winter after the club finished this last MLS season at the very bottom of the table with the worst point total in club history.

After seemingly taking his time to weigh his options at the end of the Galaxy season, Schmid has begun to make some positive steps toward getting LA back to the team supporters enjoy watching.

The first major move made by LA was bringing in 26 year-old Norwegian defender Jorgen Skjelvik. Skjelvik most recently played both full back and center back for Rosenborg BK in Norway where the team won the league title. Playing on the defensive end, Skjelvik was able to help out Rosenborg in his 163 appearances with the club netting 6 goals along with 13 assists. The versatility of Skjelvik will be his greatest strength on an LA team that lacked an identity or any real difference makers on the defensive end last season.

Skjelvik isn’t the only addition made to the Galaxy defense recently. On December 18th it was made official by the club that David Bingham of the rival San Jose Earthquakes will be joining LA.

Bingham is a veteran MLS keeper and is instantly a massive upgrade at the position over last season’s options. Playing for San Jose since 2011, Bingham entrenched himself into the starting role in 2015 and has been consistently considered one of the league’s top keepers since. Bingham has received 3 caps for the United States Men’s National Team and at just age 28, has many more opportunities to impress at that level.

So far this is a great start for LA. With rumors of a new forward addition on the horizon, the amount moves being made by the Galaxy won’t be slowing anytime soon.
