According to Corey Brock | @FollowThePadres who covers the San Diego Padres announced yesterday morning that the team will make a one year qualifying offer to 2015 All-Star outfielder Justin Upton.
#Padres will make qualifying offer to J-Up; leaning toward yes on IPK. https://t.co/Kc7pkrAvIp

This option makes since but they may do the same to starting pitcher Ian Kennedy who went (9-15, 4.28 ERA) this past season. Versus Justin Upton’s stellar season of (26 home runs, 81 RBI, and a batting average of .251 and OPS of .790)
Moving forward the San Diego Padres and other MLB clubs will have until Friday at 2:00 PM PT to offer one year qualifying deals to key players.
This could become a very intriguing development as an outfielder like Upton only age 28, will command quite a bit of money on the open market. My guess is that Upton will seek more than 15.8 million for the 2016 season.
Whether or not he accepts will be key in the Padres decisions as free agency will begin to pick up here very shortly.
