The San Diego Padres kicked off their Cactus League schedule as they played two games with their companions at Peoria Sports Complex, the Seattle Mariners.

Game 1

It was the first opportunity for Padres fans to see Matt Kemp and Justin Upton in action. The starting pitcher for the Padres was converted outfielder Jason Lane. Lane is best known for his days as an outfielder for the Houston Astros.

Cameron Maybin started the game with a lead-off single and stolen base in the 1st.

The highlight of the game came in the 7th-inning when Justin Upton belted a ball off of the center field batters-eye for his first home run in a San Diego uniform. Upton finished 1-3 on the day.

Yangervis Solarte accounted for two of the Padres seven hits. A great start for him as he tries to win the starting job at third base.

The Padres fell to the Mariners by a score of 4-3.

Game 2

On the second day of Spring Training another match-up with the Seattle Mariners was on tap.

On the mound for the Padres today would be Andrew Cashner. He pitched 1 inning giving up 1 run on 3 hits.

Ian Kennedy would come in to relieve Cashner. Kennedy gave up a two-run home run to Nelson Cruz, in his 2 innings of work.

Shortstop Alexi Amarista got off to a hot start as he went 3-3 with 1 RBI on the day.

Will Venable clubbed a two-run home run off of  lefty Charlie Furbush in the 5th inning.

The game was close until the 8th inning when the Mariners tallied 4 runs off of off-season acquisition Sean Kelley. The Padres dropped their second straight game to the Mariners, this time 9-4.

San Diego is in action again on Friday against the White Sox. Odrisamer Despaigne will get the start for the Friars.
