Jose Valverde is a 11 year pro and has spent time with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, and New York Mets.
Last season Valverde pitched for the Mets and appeared in 21 games. He posted a 5.66 ERA in 20.2 innings. The 36 year-old will turn 37 by the time the season starts for the Padres.
Reports on the contract say that it will be a minor league deal with an invitation to training camp. After struggling in his short stint with the Mets last season he was released by the club and was a free agent.
It is very unlikely that Valverde will pitch in late game situations for the Padres next season.
