It was believed early in the free agency period that Shields was waiting for Jon Lester to sign in an attempt to gauge his value. After Lester signed with the Chicago Cubs a Shields decision was expected but it never came into play.
Now after Max Scherzer signed a big $210 million dollar deal it is finally Shields turn. The San Diego Padres have made plenty of moves this offseason and there have been talks about them acquiring a big name pitcher.
Cole Hamels has been mentioned as a possibility due to his ties with the Los Angeles area. If not Hamels Shields is a valuable option.
Last season Shields went 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA. He is regarded as one of the best pitchers in the league and would be a huge splash if the Padres were to pull this off.
A big question in this whole situation is just how much Shields is worth and how much he wants. Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Shields contract demands.
James Shields has been seeking a 5 year $125 million contract while teams have been discussing more in the 4 year, $80 million range.

Whether or not the Padres are willing to pay that kind of price of Shields has yet to be seen. It will be an interesting next couple days for the Padres and the Shields camp.
