The New York Yankees have traded right-handed reliever Shawn Kelley to the San Diego Padres this afternoon. According the Padres official team site, they acquired Kelley in exchange for Johnny Barbato.

The Yankees tweeted the following today to announce the trades:

Kelley has spent the past two seasons in New York, and was previously with the Seattle Mariners. Last season Kelley was a bullpen option as he went 3-6 with a 4.53 ERA. He also recorded 4 saves for the Yankees last season. Kelley appeared in a career-high 59 games.

Many believe this deal benefits the Yankees as they are able to shed cap. Kelley will become a free agent at the end of the 2015 season, with this being said he will have a year to show his worth for the Padres.

The Padres have been extremely active this offseason and have added depth to their bullpen with the addition of Kelley.
