San Diego Chargers Sign New Punter

In the midst of the Sunday night match up between the San Diego Chargers and the New England Patriots, there was a punt that was easily blocked by the Patriots. It was a big play for the Patriots as they would score a touchdown just two plays afterwards.

On the blocked punt, though, Chargers’ punter, Mike Scifres, was injured on the play. It was bad enough where the cart had to come out and take Scifres away for the game leaving placekicker, Nick Novak, in charge of punting duty for the rest of the night. Novak struggled at first but got some better punts as the night went on. His average would be 40 yards per punt.

Still, the Chargers needed to make a roster signing  soon after the Chargers’ game knowing Scifres was surely to be out for some time. As a result, the Chargers, as of today, signed veteran punter Matt McBriar.

McBriar has been around the NFL for a long time and has had great success as a punter, especially with the Dallas Cowboys. McBriar is 35 years old and played his first 8 seasons with the Cowboys before playing for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012 and Pittsburgh Steelers in 2013.

McBriar was elected to the pro bowl twice (2006, 2010) and named second-team all-pro. McBriar is the all-time leader in gross punting average (45.3), net average (38.1), and punts inside the 20 (175).

Scifres has been diagnosed with a fractured clavicle so he should be about for a few weeks at least. It may be safe to say McBriar will be the Chargers’ punter for the rest of the season.

Charger fans should be pleased with this signing as McBriar is the closest the Chargers will get to their broken punter, Scifres.
