Rich Hill Stymies Giants In Debut, 1-0
- Updated: August 25, 2016
The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the San Francisco Giants, 1-0. Rich Hill made his long-awaited debut for the Dodgers and impressed with six shutout innings. Justin Turner‘s home run was the difference while the bullpen shut down the division rivals in the close win.
WORTH THE WAIT
Rich Hill, who was dealing with a finger blister issue prior to his trade deadline move to the Dodgers, impressed in his long-awaited debut. Through six innings of work, the 36-year-old lefty gave up only five hits without surrendering a run. He also struck out three without walking any batter.
The Dodgers bullpen proved to be a force yet again on the close win, as Pedro Baez, Joe Blanton and Kenley Jansen combined for three scoreless innings to finish the game.
In the 8th inning, Joe Blanton gave up a walk and hit to put runners on the corners with two outs. Dave Roberts came in to pull him, but convinced his manager to let him stay in the game. The right-handed reliever induced a deep flyout to end the Giants’ threat. Kenley Jansen sealed the win for his 37th save of the season.
HITS AND STREAKS
The Dodgers were no-hit through three innings, but Justin Turner broke it in a big way, blasting a solo home run off Johnny Cueto to break the scoreless tie. His 24th home run of the season proved to be the difference in the game.
Adrian Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to 17 games with a one-out single in the 3rd inning. Meanwhile, the hot-hitting Corey Seager failed to extend his 14-game hitting streak with an 0-4 night.
WHAT’S NEXT
With the win tonight, the Dodgers are now three games ahead of the Giants in the NL West standings. After the series concludes tomorrow, they are scheduled to match up six more times to conclude the last stretch of the season.
Ross Stripling (3-4, 4.04 ERA) is slated to start tomorrow night’s rubber match, as the Dodgers look to sweep their division rivals and face Matt Moore (7-10, 4.18 ERA). First pitch is at 7:10PM on SportsNet LA.
