It is early in the 2014 NBA season but many Los Angeles Laker fans are already looking forward to next year. Specifically, the off season where the Lakers are expected to attempt several different moves in order to rebuild the Lakers back into a playoff team.

To return back to the traditional Lakers of being in title contention every single season, it will take much more than just one transaction to turn it all around. Still, there are now reports, this early in the season, that the Lakers will make a strong push for Boston Celtics‘ point guard, Rajon Rondo, in free agency in the summer.

The report is valid except it is solely based around the opinions of other NBA executives, meaning, this is not coming from the Laker organization declaring they will go after Rondo. Instead, its just other NBA executives strongly believing the Lakers will do such a move. This does come with very good reason to believe, though.

The Lakers have had a liking for Rondo ever since the Dwight Howard fiasco where there were trade talks involving moving Howard in a 3-team deal involving getting Rondo back in return from the Celtics. Obviously, nothing ever came about that but it is still another clue into the Lakers’ interest for Rondo.

Here is the SI.com report on the NBA executives thinking Rondo will be pursued by the Lakers:

There is one player who makes sense in LA next season: Rajon Rondo. Several rival executives believe the Lakers will make a strong run at Rondo next summer, and it’s easy to see why. Rondo is young (28), plays a critical position and shares the same win-at-all-bleeping-cost attitude as Bryant. The Celtics are rebuilding and have a young playmaker in Marcus Smart, which may limit their desire to hand Rondo max money.

The Lakers are, most likely, going to depart with aging point guard, Steve Nash, in the off season which will mean a large void at the point guard position. All the Lakers have right now is Jeremy Lin who is definitely not a starting caliber point guard. Lin is good off the bench but nothing more.

Rondo has done some great things with the Celtics as his passing ability ranks among the best in the NBA and, probably, in NBA history. Rondo has averaged double digit assists in 4 different seasons in his career in the NBA. Rondo struggles to shoot but, when you have Kobe Bryant on the team, this really shouldn’t be a problem.

Until then, we just all have to wait very patiently for the 2015 summer. For many Laker fans, it could not come soon enough.
