Reign Wrap-Up: Ontario Loses Twice, Falls Into 3rd In Pacific

A win followed by two 4-1 losses wrap up last week for the Ontario Reign, which is now in third place in the Pacific Division at 24-12-8-0, a mere .54 percentage points behind the San Jose Barracuda. Ontario next faces the Iowa Wild at 7 p.m. PST, Wednesday, February 15 at the Citizens Bank Arena in Ontario.

In the lone victory of the week, on February 8, the Reign beat the Bakersfield Condors 2-1 at home. It only took 37 seconds to get on the board as forward Mike Amadio scored 37 seconds into the game. He added an assist on a goal by Patrick Bjorkstrand halfway through the first period to give the Reign the goals it needed. Goalie Jack Campbell saved 26 on 27 shots.

“Soupy (Campbell) was there when we needed him,” coach Mike Stothers said through the Reign Insider Lindsay Czarnecki.

Next came the rival San Diego Gulls Friday. Outshot 38-27, the Reign could only muster one goal – Jonny Brodzinski (from Tom Gilbert and T.J. Hensick) – at 14:31 of the third period. Campbell, who started his 28th game in a row made an impressive 34 saves, but gave up four to the Gulls, which has beaten Ontario three consecutive games within a week.

The final Reign game of the week came Sunday against the first place Barracuda, a pivotal game to say the least. Final: San Jose Barracuda 4 – Ontario Reign 1. The lone Reign goal came via Bjorkstrand (from Hensick and Kurtis MacDermid) at 16:30 of the first. Campbell stopped 26 shots and saw his record dip to 21-9-5. Since the Barracuda took its eighth straight game, that team takes first place, pushing the Reign down to third in the Pacific Division standings behind the second place Gulls.

Said Stothers, “We are missing some key people from our lineup, no doubt. But we have enough to fill out the roster sheet, so whoever is in the lineup we expect to win. It is new territory for some, but like any family we will push through this and be better for it.”
