Reign Weekly Wrapup: 0-5-0-0 Start For a Team Ready to Turn it Around
- Updated: October 23, 2017
The Condors swooped right in this weekend and killed everything in its path, leaving behind a bunch of feathers, ripped apart pieces of the Reign crowns, and an opposition that is still looking for its first win of the season.
That’s some silly analogy for some crappy results of a couple hockey games.
Bottom line: after two losses to the Bakersfield Condors this weekend at the Citizens Business Bank Arena – 2-0 Friday and 3-1 Saturday – the Ontario Reign finds itself 0-5-0-0, at the bottom of the Pacific Division.
I don’t even have to look up the standings. Can’t go much lower than 0-5.
In the Friday loss, the Reign outshot its opponents 32-26 including a season-high 17 shots in the first, but still couldn’t find the back of the net, earning goalie Nick Ellis his second career shutout.
What can you say about the Reign’s play? Well, at least they got another chance Saturday.
That game, the team outshot the Condors 36-25 and did register a goal, as Reign defenseman Paul LaDue scored with 1:55 left in the game, on a shot off the right-wing face-off circle.
Fear not, the season is young and Coach Mike Strothers is remaining positive. “I was pretty impressed with the way they battled. I saw a lot of positive signs in how we’re going to get this turned around. We had a lot of good looks, plays, and some opportunities. We started the season 0-5 but there’s no reason we can’t turn it around and win five in a row.”
The first of those five would be against the Cleveland Monsters at 4 p.m., pst, Friday, October 27 at Quicken Loans Arena.
