Reign Weekly Wrap-up: Ontario Holds to First Place in Pacific
- Updated: January 31, 2017
As of Monday night, the AHL All-Star break has come and gone with the Pacific League leading Ontario Reign showcasing three of its all-stars – Jonny Brodzinski, Vincent LoVerde, Jack Campbell – along with coach Mike Stothers heading the Pacific. Besides an assist from each of these players (yes even the Reign goalie Campbell), the Pacific division showed little highlight, losing 6-3 to the North, 6-1 to Atlantic and 5-3 to the Central Division.
Now back to reality.
The week prior to the All-Star games, the Reign went 2-0-1 with a victory against Bakersfield Condors as well as a victory and OT loss to San Antonio Rampage, leaving them 23-9-7-0 with 53 points, percentage points ahead of San Jose Barracuda. Ontario next plays rival San Diego Gulls at 7 p.m., Friday, February 3 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena.
In the Wednesday, January 25 game, Brodzinski scored his 14th goal of the season, this one at 9:23 of the third period to give the team a 3-2 edge over the Bakersfield Condors. Campbell saved 24 of 26 shots.
Two days later, the Rampage and the Reign played evenly each period, forcing an overtime, with the Rampage taking the victory on a Rocco Grimaldi goal, his 18th of the season. In this game, Brodzinski scored his first ever hat trick, including a shorthanded goal.
The Reign turned the tide on Saturday, beating the same Rampage team, 4-3. Defenseman Paul LaDue got a goal and an assist in the game. Campbell got the win, saving 32 on 35 shots, giving him a league leading 20 wins.
