Reign Weekly Wrap-up: Springsteen Predicts It
- Updated: December 27, 2017
Bruce Springsteen has a 1987 song with the lyrics “one step up and two steps back.” One may be wondering if he was predicting the play of the Ontario Reign last week. You can never be sure. The Reign took the first game of the week in overtime 4-3 against the Texas Stars, lost in overtime 4-3 against the dastardly San Diego Gulls and then repeated such a loss to the Gulls 4-3 last Saturday.
Ontario, at 13-12-1-1 and 28 points, are two points out of the basement in the Pacific Division, and next get a chance at the step forward at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, December 27 against the basement dwellers Bakersfield Condors in an away game.
In last Wednesday’s victory, Justin Auger scored at 1:09 of overtime to seal the deal over the Stars. Other goals came from Austin Wagner, Andrew Crescenzi, and Cory Ward, the latter coming at 13:27 of the third to force an overtime. Goalie Cal Petersen saved 22 of 25 shots in the victory.
In the Friday overtime loss, the Reign relinquished a 3-1 lead in the third period and then gave up an overtime goal at 3:22 to lose 4-3 to the Gulls. Goals from the Reign came from Michael Mersch, Paul LaDue, and captain Brett Sutter. Jack Campbell blocked 31 of 35 shots, one too few for the win.
The next day the Reign experienced a déjà vu with the Gulls, losing 4-3. Petersen took that loss, saving 30 of 34 shots. In the game, newly acquired defenseman Jordan Subban got his first goal of the season. Even so, it wasn’t enough for the Reign, and so completed the amazing prediction from Springsteen from so long ago.
