The Los Angeles Angels pushed across a run in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game and thwart a road loss, but they couldn’t take advantage of base runners during extra innings, and the Chicago White Sox eventually won 3-2 in the bottom of the 13th inning Wednesday night on a walk-off double.
John Danks and Andrew Heaney both had their respective opponents reeling early, as neither the White Sox nor the Angels could score through the first half of the game.
The scoreless tie was broken in the top of the fifth inning, when Connor Gillaspie doubled home Johnny Giavotella off Danks to give the Halos a 1-0 lead, though Heaney would give up that lead immediately in the bottom of the fifth.
In that frame, Gordon Beckham scored Trayce Thompson on a sacrifice fly to bring the game back to 1-1, and send both clubs back into a tie in the on-going pitcher’s duel.
The White Sox got another run in the bottom of the sixth, when Alexei Ramirez slugged an RBI double off Heaney to score Tyler Saladino and make it 2-1.
That score would hold until the top of the ninth, when Sox closer David Robertson came on and got into some trouble, allowing two hits and an eventual RBI groundout by Gillaspie to re-tie the game at two runs apiece, and send it into extra innings on the south side of Chicago.
The game stayed like that until the 13th inning, when Cesar Ramos came in for the Halos, and promptly allowed a single to Jose Abreu, and a double to Avisail Garcia to end the game and give the White Sox a walk-off win.
The Angels next head to Kansas City beginning Thursday night for a four-game series against the Royals.
