Despite a mini-rally in the ninth inning, the Dodgers were held in check offensively the Chicago White Sox, and lost Tuesday afternoon’s Spring Training tilt in Glendale to the Sox by the score of 2-1.
The White Sox jumped out to an early lead on Tuesday, when Melky Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly that carried into foul territory and was tracked down by Carl Crawford, but nevertheless scored Carlos Sanchez and advanced J.B. Shuck to third base. Then, Jose Abreu doubled home Shuck, to give the White Sox a 2-0 lead after three innings.
The Dodgers got one back in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Chris Heisey hit a solo home run off White Sox starter Carlos Rodon to cut the lead in half.
From there, and for most of the game, the pitchers took over.
Starter Joe Wieland ended up going five innings for the Dodgers, allowing the two runs on nine hits, but with no walks and one strikeout. David Aardsma, Juan Nicasio, Yimi Garcia and Sergio Santos each threw scoreless innings after him to keep the White Sox in check.
For the Sox, starter Rodon was dominant, allowing just the solo home run in 5.1 innings. He gave up four total hits, walked two, and struck out two, and the Dodgers never quite figured him out at the plate.
Kyle Drabek, Zach Duke, and Jairo Asencio held the Dodgers in check after Rodon’s departure, and the club went into the bottom of the ninth inning down 2-1.
Asencio stayed on for the Sox in the ninth, and started the inning by allowing a leadoff deflection-aided a single to Dodgers minor leaguer Nate Samson, and hitting Ali Solis with a pitch. With two on and nobody out, suddenly, the Dodgers had the first significant rally they’d seen all afternoon. Peter Lavin then sacrificed himself on a bunt to put runners on second and third with one out.
Alex Guerrero came to the plate with Asencio still pitching, and failed to even put the ball in play with the tying run ninety feet away, striking out for the second out of the inning.
With two on and two out, now, Heisey came to the plate having already driven in the only run of the game for the Dodgers, but it wasn’t meant to be. His fly ball ended the game and sealed the victory for the White Sox.
Jimmy Rollins and Yasiel Puig both finished the game 1-for-3, and Yasmani Grandal was 1-for-2 with a walk, but the Dodgers failed to get the offense going and never really woke up the bats all day long except for Heiseyâs home run.
Today was the final Spring Training game in Glendale, as the Dodgers visit the Royals in Surprise tomorrow at 12:05 pm PT. Then, they will play three exhibition games against the Angels on Thursday and Friday (at Angel Stadium) and Saturday (at Dodger Stadium).
The Dodgers home opener is Monday afternoon against the San Diego Padres. Game time starts at 1:10 pm.
