After a game of being ahead for the majority of play, the Los Angeles Angels ultimately lost to the Rangers 7-6.
In the eighth inning the Angels were in the lead, 6-4, but Joe Smith allowed four hits and a walk while only recording one out.
Smith said the following, as reported by MLB.com:
“Weird inning — a lot of ground balls, and some not right at people,” Smith said. “It’s one of those innings I’ve just got to forget about and go out there and do the same thing. Go out, face the same guys, they hit ground balls right at people and move on. But that’s kind of how a ground-ball pitcher struggles.”
Hector Santiago and Yovani Gallardo joined the game but they managed to give up a combined nine runs. Gallardo added five in his innings, and Santiago played five innings and allowed four runs.
In the same game, the Angels messed up a big opportunity to turn a double play in the Rangers’ three-run eighth. There were runners on the corners, with no outs. At this point the Angels were leading 6-4. Albert Pujols fielded a ground ball from Shin-Soo-Choo, and he threw to shortstop Erick Aybar, which covered second base. The choice made next changed the game. Aybar decided to throw to home, in an effort to stop Andrus, instead of tagging Mitch Moreland.
MLB.com puts it like this:
“Erick’s got a good head out there, he understands the game and he just reacted,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “It happens. These guys are playing aggressively — it’s just a play that, yeah, you want to get the out and get the double play.”
The game ended 7-6.
The two teams will return to play each other today at 12:35 p.m. PT.
