Daniel Descalso hit a pinch-hit single off Shawn Kelley with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, and the Colorado Rockies snapped a five-game losing streak, defeating the Padres on the walk-off, 5-4.
James Shields started for the Padres and ended up going six innings, allowing just three runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out five and threw only 78 pitches (and just 45 strikes), but was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the top of the seventh with the Padres rallying to take the lead.
The Padres opened the game in the lead when Yangervis Solarte hit a solo home run in the top of the first inning off Rockies starter Kyle Kendrick.
In the bottom of the first, though, two players the Rockies held out of last night’s game due to injury – Corey Dickerson and Nolan Arenado – did damage to give the Rockies the lead. Dickerson hit a solo home run to left center field, followed later by an Arenado double to give the Rockies a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the second, the Rockies got another run when DJ LeMahieu doubled to left field and scored Michael McKenry , making it 3-1 Rockies.
Both Kendrick and Shields settled down after that, and neither team scored again until the top of the sixth inning when Wil Myers hit a solo home run off Kendrick.
Kendrick stayed on in the seventh, with the Rockies clinging to a 3-2 lead, and promptly coughed it up; Yonder Alonso scored on a Derek Norris double to tie the game, and then Cory Spangenberg – pinch-hitting for Shields – doubled home Norris to make the game 4-3 in favor of San Diego.
That lead wouldn’t last, though, as Corey Dickerson hit a full count changeup from the hand of Joaquin Benoit deep into the center field seats. It was Dickerson’s second solo home run of the game, and it tied score at 4-4 heading into the ninth inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Rockies loaded the bases off Kelley, and Descalso came up with the Padres shuffling their defense. Wil Myers came into the infield to play first base, and the Padres went with five infielders, but it was to no avail.
The Padres can still win the series tomorrow, though a Rockies victory would split the set.
The Padres and Rockies finish the four-game series Thursday afternoon with a 2:10 pm PT start from Coors Field in Denver. Tyson Ross will start for the Padres, against Jordan Lyles of the Rockies.
