Amid an uncharacteristically rainy night full of lightning and thunder in Los Angeles, the Colorado Rockies ended an eleven game losing streak on one bad pitch by Dodgers’ interim closer Yimi Garcia in the top of the ninth inning, when Carlos Gonzalez crushed a three-run home run to give the visitors a 5-4 victory.
The Dodgers struck first in the bottom of the first, when Adrian Gonzalez doubled home Jimmy Rollins and Howie Kendrick off Rockies starter Chad Bettis. Bettis, who was called up to replace Tyler Matzek when he was demoted to AAA for wildness, was making his first start since 2013.
The Rockies answered back in the top of the second, when Wilin Rosario hit a solo home run off Dodgers starter Brett Anderson to make it a 2-1 game.
Anderson got his revenge in the bottom of the second, though, doubling off Bettis to drive in a run and make it a 3-1 affair.
The Dodgers pushed a fourth run across off Bettis in the fifth when Yasmani Grandal singled home Gonzalez, and then the game went into a rain delay – the first in Dodger Stadium in years – in the top of the sixth, effectively knocking out both starters on the night with the Dodgers leading 4-1.
Eighty-five minutes later, the game resumed and would last late into the night, with the Dodgers taking a 4-2 lead into the ninth inning for closer Yimi Garcia.
Garcia allowed two singles to Nick Hundley and Drew Stubbs to start the ninth, and then Carlos Gonzalez came up and connected on a three-run blast to give the Rockies the late lead.
John Axford came on in the bottom of the ninth to save the game for the Rockies, who had lost eleven in a row up until Thursday night.
The Dodgers and Rockies will next play each other Friday night, and then finish the weekend against each other through Sunday in the four-game series. From there, the Dodgers have an off day before going to San Francisco for three games beginning on Tuesday.
