RECAP: Rangers 4, Padres 3

The San Diego Padres ran into a loss — literally — in the tenth inning Wednesday night, losing late to the Texas Rangers 4-3 at Petco Park in downtown San Diego.

The Rangers got on board first in the top of the first off Padres’ starter Ian Kennedy, when Adrian Beltre doubled to score Prince Fielder.

That score proved to be enough for both Kennedy and Rangers’ starter Cole Hamels, as they each held their opponent scoreless for the next few innings, until the bottom of the fourth, when the Padres took the lead with two runs.

In that inning, Clint Barmes hit a double to right field that scored both Jedd Gyorko and Matt Kemp, taking the lead at 2-1 and touching up Hamels for the first bit of trouble he had all day.

The Rangers would re-tie the game in the top of the fifth, though, when Chris Gimenez homered off Kennedy to make the game 2-2.

The Padres got a run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead when Barmes got an RBI on a groundout off Hamels, but couldn’t take advantage of more base runners against the Rangers’ starter and settled for taking a one-run lead into the late innings.

In the bottom of the eighth, though, Joaquin Benoit came on for the Padres and tried to send the game to Craig Kimbrel, only to give up a hit, two walks, and a sacrifice fly to Adrian Beltre that ended up tying the game at three runs apiece and ruining the Padres’ chances of winning up to that point.

The 3-3 tie lasted into the tenth inning, when Mitch Moreland doubled home Elvis Andrus off Padres’ reliever Bud Norris to give Texas a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom of the tenth, after Yangervis Solarte walked to lead off the inning and was then bunted to second base, he got caught between second and third on a ground ball to shortstop Andrus, and was tagged out for the second out of the inning, effectively ruining the Padres’ rally.

With two outs and nobody on, Matt Kemp came up against Rangers reliever Sam Dyson, and grounded out in a fielder’s choice to wrap up the win for the Rangers.

The Padres have a big series on deck, as they host the Los Angeles Dodgers for four games beginning Thursday night at Petco Park, and lasting through the weekend. Then, the Colorado Rockies come to town for Labor Day and a mid-week series.
