The much anticipated match up between Gerrit Cole (14-5, 2.39 ERA, 6.0 IP, 5 K’s, 4 Hits, 3 ER) and Clayton Kerhsaw (9-6, 2.51 ERA, 6.0 IP, 5 K’s, 9 Hits, 4 ER) didn’t disappoint. Both aces for their ball clubs would recieve a no-decision in this game.
Kershaw’s scoreless streak of 37 consecutive innings pitched came to an end on the very first pitch he threw. Pirates lead off man Gregory Polanco hit a home run to center field as the Pirates went up 1-0 early on. In the third inning the Dodgers regained the lead via fielders choice as Jimmy Rollins and Joc Pederson scored to make it a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth inning Clayton Kershaw struggled as he walked in the tying run as the score was 2-2. The Dodgers regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning as Rollins hit an RBI single to left field as Pederson scored giving Los Angeles a 3-2 lead.
This unfortunately wouldn’t last long as Pittsburgh regained the lead. Pirates star Andrew McCutchen hit an RBI double as Aramiz Ramirez hit the second RBI in the bottom of the fifth inning as the Pirates led 4-3. The Dodgers would tie the game at 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning as once again Jimmy Rollins hit an RBI double as Carl Crawford scored.
Even though the Dodgers would lose this game in the bottom of the tenth inning 5-4 there was a lot to take away from the loss last night. Playing a team that looks like they’ll be in the postseason is a good indicator for how well the Dodgers will need to step it up.
Today at 1:05 PM PT game two of this series will begin. Dodgers starter Mat Latos (4-7, 4.29 ERA) will face Pirates starter Francisco Liriano (7-6, 2.92 ERA) Lets hope that the Dodgers respond to a tough loss the right way this afternoon at PNC Ballpark.
