RECAP: Padres Overpower Rockies, 10-4

James Shields (W,13-6), gave the San Diego Padres just what they needed to take the final game, of the three game series from the Colorado Rockies, in their final trip to the Mile High City, this season.

Shields gave the team 6-2/3 innings of solid work, allowing only two hits, striking out eight Rockies, walking four, while the Rockies did get to him for, scoring all of their runs off of the Padres ace.

The bats were definitely working for the Friars, as the managed to score early and often thru the first six innings, but the team slowed down a bit, not scoring in the final three innings. Rockies starter Kyle Kendrick (L,6-13), gave up homers to Jedd Gyorko, Cory Spangenberg, Yangervis Solarte and Matt Kemp.

The offensive explosion by the Padres were lead by Justin Upton and Kemp, both players reached base three times with three hits. Every starting Padre managed to reach base in this contest and making a very impressive showing with runners in scoring position, going 5-11, giving the manager and the hitting coach a very enjoyable win.

San Diego picks up their 70th win of the season but the team is still ten games under the .500 mark. The team will be heading back home to start a three game series with the San Francisco Giants, starting Tuesday night at Petco Park. San Diego (70-80), are currently in fourth place in the National League West, 16 games behind the division leading Los Angeles Dodgers.

In the first game of the series with the San Francisco Giants, Tyson Ross,(10-10, 3.61 ERA), will get the start for the Padres. He will be opposed by the Giants Chris Heston,(11-10, 3.18 ERA).
