Cardinals starter Michael Wacha,(W, 15-4), completed six strong innings, striking out only three Padres batters on 102 pitches. Padres starter Colin Rea,(L, 2-1), did not get a chance to make it into the fifth inning, he did get four strikeouts but allowed five runs (four earned runs) and five hits.
St. Louis was lead by Jason Heyward and Stephen Piscotty, who both collected three hits. Piscotty hit his second homer of the season, off of Odrisamer Despaigne, who took the mound in relief of Rea, in the top of the fifth. Matt Kemp got a two run single in the bottom of the ninth but was not enough and the Padres was still seven runs short of tying the game. San Diego also left eleven runners on base, in the defeat.
The Padres(61-63), will now head to the road, to play the Washington Nationals in the Nations capital. A classic pitching matchup will take place on Tuesday night. James Shields,(9-5, 3.74 ERA), will take the hill for the Padres, he will be opposed by Stephen Strasburg,(7-6, 4.22 ERA).
San Diego is currently in fourth place, 6.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers, in the National League West.
