The San Diego Padres played the middle game of their series with the Cincinnati Reds and with a rally in the top of the eight inning, found a way to get another good win, 9-7.
Padres starter Andrew Cashner was very generous in the hit department and in the first inning, Cincinnati batters got to him early, scoring 3 runs. Zack Cozart belted a homer to left, in the third to push the lead to four. Cashner managed to get through until the 5th inning, on 94 pitches. Matt Kemp, got the Padres on the board, with a home run to right center, his 11th of the season. The turning point of the game was the seventh inning grand slam, by Yonder Alonso, off of Reds reliever Tony Cingrani, to tie the game at 7-7. The Padres added more runs in the top of the eight, that gave them the lead for good.
The two big guns in the Padres bullpen, Joaquin Benoit and Craig Kimbrel, came on in the 8th & 9th innings respectively, to shut down the Reds and their hopes for a comeback.
San Diego has now taken the first two games of this series, which ends today. Odrisamer Despaigne (3-3, 4.56 ERA), is scheduled to take the hill for San Diego, Cincinnati will counter with Johnny Cueto (3-4, 2.90), who is trying to help the Reds avoid the series sweep.
