Recap: Padres 9, Rockies 5 – Matt Kemp Hits The Cycle

The San Diego Padres not only won their game in a comfortable fashion last night but managed to make history as well. Padres outfielder Matt Kemp went (4-5, 2 Runs, 1 Home Run, 4 RBI) became the first player in Padres history to hit for the cycle.
Both pitchers for each team would go without a decision. Padres starting pitcher Tyson Ross (8-9. 3.40 ERA, 5.0 IP, 5 K’s, 6 Hits, 2 ER) pitched well against Rockies starter Yohan Flande (0-0, 4.19 ERA, 6.0 IP, 4 K’s, 8 Hits, 4 ER)
The scoring started in the top of the first inning. Matt Kemo hit a two-run homer to center field as San Diego took an early 2-0 lead. The Padres added one more run as Jedd Gyorko hit an RBI double to left as Justin Upton scored. By the end of the top of the first the Padres were up 3-0.
The Colorado Rockies responded as third baseman Nolan Arenado hit a two-run homer to left field. It was 3-2 San Diego. In the bottom of the fourth inning the Rockies tied the game at 3-3 via sacrifice fly by left fielder Brandon Barnes.
San Diego quickly regained the lead. In the top of the fifth inning catcher Derek Norris hit a solo shot to left field as it was 4-3 Padres. Colorado tied the game yet again in the bottom of the sixth. Brandon Barnes hit an RBI triple to right field as D.J. LeMahieu scored to tie the game at 4-4.
In the top of the seventh inning the game was opened up. Matt Kemp hit an RBI double to center field as Yangervis Solarte scored for San Diego. The scoring continued as Jedd Gyorko hit a three-run home run to center field bringing in Matt Kemp and Justin Upton. It was 8-5 Padres at the end of the seventh as the Rockies scored another run.
Matt Kemp solidfied the cycle in the top of the ninth inning. His RBI triple in the top of the ninth was the final run scored as it was 9-5 Padres.
Tonight at 5:10 PM PT game two will begin. Padres starting pitcher Andrew Cashner (4-12, 4.09 ERA) will face Rockies starter Jon Gray (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
