Ian Kennedy tossed a seven-inning gem, and the bats attacked all day long, as the San Diego Padres defeated the San Francisco Giants 9-1 Wednesday afternoon at AT&T Park.
The Padres jumped on Giants starter Chris Heston the second time through their order, when they put up five runs in the top of the third inning.
The fun started when Matt Kemp doubled home Cory Spangenberg to get the Padres on the board first. After that, and a walk by Justin Upton, a single by yonder Alonso scored Kemp, and a single by Jedd Gyorko scored Upton to make the game 3-0 in favor of San Diego.
Alexi Amarista then singled home Alonso, and Austin Hedges singled home Gyorko, capping the rally and giving the Padres a 5-0 lead heading to the bottom of the third.
In the bottom half, the Giants would get one back when Matt Duffy scored on a single by Nori Aoki, but Padres starter Ian Kennedy held the Giants in check for much of the afternoon.
The Padres picked up another run in the seventh when Wil Myers hit a triple off Giants reliever Javier Lopez that scored Kennedy and gave some cushion to the starter and bullpen for the late innings.
Then, in the eighth, the Padres put the game out of reach, when Gyorko doubled to bring in Upton, followed by a fielder’s choice and a sacrifice fly by Hedges, all off Giants reliever Jean Machi. Three runs came in, giving the Padres and Kennedy a 9-1 cushion before Machi was relieved by Jeremy Affeldt.
Kennedy was finished after seven innings, with Brandon Maurer coming on to throw the 8th with the seven run lead.
After Maurer’s scoreless eighth, Frank Garces tossed the ninth for the Padres, and closed it out for the Friars.
Kennedy’s start was masterful, too, allowing just six hits and one run – with no walks – in seven innings while striking out five Giants and throwing 65 strikes out of 94 total pitches.
The Padres are in Arizona starting Thursday night, facing the Diamondbacks in a four-game series that will last through the weekend.
After that, the Friars will head to Seattle for a two-game series against the mariners before returning home for four against the Washington Nationals and three more against the Chicago Cubs.
