Recap: Padres 9, Braves 0 Melvin Upton Jr. Hits 2 Home Runs

The San Diego Padres (58-62) were able to win the second game last night of their series between the Atlanta Braves (53-66). This win solidifies the series as the Padres held the Braves lineup scoreless in Petco Park.

San Diego Padres starting pitcher James Shields (9-5, 3.74 ERA, 6.0 IP, 7 K’s, 5 Hits, 2 BB, 0 ER) (W) pitched very well in his win last night. He faced Braves starter Matt Wisler (5-3, 4.65 ERA, 5.0 IP, 2K’s, 6 Hits, 2 ER) (L) who only gave up two runs.

The scoring began in the bottom of the third inning as Matt Kemp (2-4, RBI)  hit a sacrifice fly as Padres second baseman Cory Spangenberg (2-3, R, K, 2 BB) scored. This gave San Diego a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth inning Padres center fielder Melvin Upton Jr. (3-4, 2 R, 2 HR, 5 RBI) hit an RBI single to right field as it was 2-0 Padres. Upton Jr, also hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning which put San Diego up 4-0.

Yangervis Solarte (1-4, R, HR, 3 RBI) continued the scoring as he hit a three-run home run to left field bringing in Alexi Amarista (2-4, R), and Brett Wallace 0-1, R, BB) By this point San Diego held a commanding 7-0 lead over Atlanta.

In the bottom of the seventh inning Melvin Upton Jr. hit his second home run of the game. This time it was another two-run home run to left center field as Derek Norris (2-4, 2 R) scored.  The final score of this game was 9-0.

This afternoon at 12:40 PM PT these two teams will be in action. Braves starting pitcher Julio Teheran (8-6, 4.44 ERA) will face Tyson Ross (8-9, 3.40 ERA) in the series finale.
