The San Diego Padres jumped all over the Chicago White Sox early Wednesday afternoon, and after hanging five runs on Sox starter Jeff Samardzija in the first inning never looked back, winning 8-2 at Camelback Ranch.
In the first, the scoring started with a Carlos Quentin RBI single that scored Cameron Maybin and made the game 1-0. Then, a Will Venable line drive single scored Yangervis Solarte, moved Quentin to third, and made the score 2-0.
The next batter, Jedd Gyorko, cleared the bases with a three-run home run to left field and capped the five-run first inning off Samardzija, who did last four innings on the mound despite the rocky first frame.
Neither team scored again until the fifth, when the Padres got two more on a Solarte home run off David Robertson that scored Yonder Alonso and pushed the San Diego lead to 7-0.
In the bottom half of the frame, the White Sox finally got on the board. Adam Eaton singled to drive in Micah Johnson off Zack Segovia to make it a 7-1 game.
Segovia was throwing in relief, after starter James Shields tossed three scoreless innings, and reliever Kevin Quackenbush threw a scoreless fourth. Shields, it has been announced, will be the Padres Opening Day starter against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
The Padres pushed another run across in top of the sixth to make the game 8-1 in favor of the Friars. Clint Barmes singled home Venable with a soft fly ball to center that Eaton wasn’t able to track down.
In the top of the eighth, the Padres threatened again after loading the bases with the help of a throwing error and a hit by pitch. However, Rocky Gale struck out with the bases load and the Padres couldn’t extend the lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Sox finally scratched another run across, when Geovany Soto drove in Jacob May on a single off Padres reliever Dale Thayer. That made the score 8-2, but the Sox couldn’t capitalize on a Padres error in the next at-bat and went to the ninth down six runs.
In the bottom of the ninth, Padres reliever Shawn Kelley set down the White Sox in short order to preserve the victory for San Diego.
The Padres play their final Arizona game tomorrow when they host the Milwaukee Brewers in Peoria at 12:05 pm PT.
From there, they will play against the Diablo Rojos of the Mexican League in an exhibition game Saturday before opening up against the Dodgers on Monday.
