RECAP: Padres 7, Rockies 6

A come-from-behind four-run eighth inning thanks to the bats of Wil Myers and Derek Norris highlighted an up-and-down night for the San Diego Padres, as they hung on to a 7-6 nail biting victory over the Colorado Rockies in Denver on Tuesday night.

Brandon Morrow started for the Padres, and while he wasn’t particularly strong, he left with the club within striking distance, allowing five runs on six hits and a walk – against three strikeouts – in six innings of work.

Clint Barmes got the scoring going for the Padres, hitting a home run in the top of the third inning off Rockies starter Tyler Matzek to make it 1-0.

Later in the inning, Matt Kemp drove in Derek Norris with a single to left field to give the Padres a two-run cushion.

In the bottom of the fourth, Morrow got into some trouble when Nick Hundley tripled home Justin Morneau on a hard line drive to right field that Kemp couldn’t come up with on a dive. Hundley then scored on an RBI groundout from DJ LeMahieu, making the game 2-2 after four frames.

The Rockies got three more in the bottom of the fifth, two scoring on a Charlie Blackmon triple, and then Blackmon scoring on a sacrifice fly by Troy Tulowitzki, to make the game 5-2 in the Rockies’ favor.

The Padres came roaring back though, scoring one in the seventh on a Wil Myers line drive double to make it 5-3.

In the eighth, the Padres exploded for four runs to take a 7-5 lead. Yangervis Solarte singled home Will Middlebrooks, Myers brought home Solarte on another single, and then Norris cleared the bases with a two-RBI double off Rockies’ reliever Boone Logan.

Things got (briefly) interesting in the ninth when Nick Hundley hit a leadoff solo home run off Craig Kimbrel, but Kimbrel settled down to retire the final three hitters of the night and preserve the win for the Padres.

Myers and Norris did much of the damage for the Padres on this night, going 3-for-4 with and two RBIs, and 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored, respectively.

Barmes added his solo blast, and Middlebrooks was 2-for-4.

After Morrow, Brandon Maurer and Joaquin Benoit put together two perfect innings of relief with two combined strikeouts, Kimbrel came on to close it out for the Friars.

The Padres have now guaranteed at least a split in this four-game series after winning the first two, and will see the Rockies again tomorrow evening at 5:40 pm PT before playing the final game of the series Thursday afternoon at Coors Field. The Rockies have now lost five straight games.
