RECAP: Padres 7, Mets 3

The San Diego Padres jumped out on Bartolo Colon and the New York Mets, scoring two runs in each of the first three innings and coasting to a 7-3 victory on Wednesday night at Citi Field in New York City.

The Padres opened up with two runs in the top of the first off Colon, thanks to an RBI single from Matt Kemp, and a sacrifice fly from Justin Upton.

In the second, the Padres got two more on RBI singles from Will Venable and Yangervis Solarte.

And then, in the third, the Padres finished off Colon — he’d last just 2.2 innings — with solo home runs by Upton and Yonder Alonso.

In the middle of that, Lucas Duda hit a solo home run for the Mets, but besides that run, Colon exited the game before throwing three complete innings, with the Padres leading 6-1.

The second half of the game featured two bizarre things, both Mets storylines: Duda’s two more home runs, to give him three total for the night, and Wilmer Flores getting traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in about the sixth inning and yet, for reasons unbeknownst to perhaps anybody but the Mets’ front office, remaining in the game until the ninth inning.

Flores was seen crying during the game (pictured above), obviously emotional after being traded away from an organization that had initially signed him in 2007, and had thus far been his only family in professional baseball.

Neither of those impacted the final score, though, and the Padres cruised to an easy 7-3 victory behind Tyson Ross, and a bullpen that allowed just one run in four innings of work.

The Padres and Mets will return to action very early tomorrow, with a game that starts just after 9am Pacific Time to wrap up their series.
