The San Diego Padres exploded for four runs off Angels starter Matt Shoemaker in the second inning and never looked back on Friday afternoon, defeating the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 7-3 in Cactus League play.
On this day, though, neither team had the benefit of free agent Will Ferrell for defensive support or power at the plate.
The Angels broke through first off Padres starter Tyson Ross, when Collin Cowgill scored on a Matt Joyce groundout to give the Halos a 1-0 lead after one inning.
But in the top half of the second, the Padres unleashed on Shoemaker, making his second start for the Angels this spring. Consecutive hits by Tommy Medica, Yangervis Solarte, Jake Goebbert and Alex Dickerson led off the inning, and after a Cory Spangenberg sacrifice fly, the Padres jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead.
The Padres got another off Shoemaker in the fourth to make it 5-1, when a Spangenberg single brought home Goebbert, who had doubled earlier in the inning. Shoemaker’s day finished allowing five runs on six hits and a walk against just two strikeouts in four innings. He’s now allowed seven runs in seven spring innings across two starts.
For the Padres, Ross threw three innings, allowing a run on two hits and two walks, exiting with the 5-1 lead. Ross has now allowed three runs (one earned) across four innings this spring.
After Padres reliever Frank Garces wiggled out of a jam in the fourth, the Angels responded in the bottom of the fifth off Jay Jackson when an Efren Navarro groundout scored Daniel Robertson, who had reached on a throwing error. The RBI shrunk the Padres lead to 5-2 heading into the sixth inning.
The Padres extended their lead to 7-2 in the sixth inning thanks to the bat of Austin Hedges. Hedges hit a two-out, two-RBI single with the bases loaded to bring home Medica and Rico Noel (who, by the way, is 0-for-1 lifetime against Ferrell).
The Angels were able to get one run back in the bottom of the seventh to tighten the game to 7-3. Marc Krauss scored on an Alex Yarbrough single off Padres reliever Marcos Mateo to cut the deficit back to four runs.
The Angels threatened again in the eighth with men on second and third and one out, but Padres reliever Scott Elbert induced a Sherman Johnson strikeout and a Johnny Giavotella pop out to end the threat and preserve the 7-3 Padre cushion heading to the ninth.
In the ninth, Elbert induced a double play ground ball off the bat of pinch-hitter Jackson Williams, and sealed the victory for San Diego.
After Ross’ start, big league relievers Frank Garces and Leonel Campos threw scoreless innings of relief for the Padres, while Mateo allowed the run in the seventh.
At the plate for the Padres, Medica was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double, and Goebbert went 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI, and two doubles. Dickerson added a triple, a run scored, and two RBIs, and big league-hopeful Spangenberg went 1-for-1 with a walk and two RBIs.
For the Angels, Mike Morin, Vinnie Pestano, and Edgar Ibarra each recorded scoreless innings in relief after Shoemaker and Salas combined to allow seven runs across their five innings of work.
Grant Green was 2-for-3 at the plate for the Halos, but never came around to score, as the Angels were just 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position. Cowgill and Taylor Featherston both added doubles for the club.
This is the only meeting between these two clubs in Cactus League action. They will see each other during the regular season May 25-27 for a three game series at Angel Stadium.
The Padres return to action Saturday afternoon when they host the Texas Rangers at 1:00pm PDT.
The Angels will play split squad games Saturday afternoon, visiting the Kansas City Royals at 1:05pm PDT and hosting the Chicago White Sox at 1:10pm PDT.
