An early pitcher’s duel turned into a wild final few innings of back and forth baseball, the San Diego Padres managed to outlast the San Francisco Giants, winning 5-4 on Wednesday night in the bottom of the ninth inning at Petco Park.
The scoring started early, with the Giants putting up two runs in the top of the first inning. Brandon Crawford singled home both Angel Pagan and Alejandro De Aza to make the game 2-0 off Padres’ starter Andrew Cashner, as the Giants desperately tried to stave off elimination from the playoffs.
Cashner settled down after that, though, and both teams threw zeros at their opposing lineups up until the seventh inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Padres were able to get two runs back, when Yangervis Solarte doubled home Jedd Gyorko and Derek Norris to tie the game off Giants’ reliever Josh Osich.
In the top of the eighth inning, the Giants would re-take the lead when Jarrett Parker homered off Joaquin Benoit, breaking the tie and once again putting it on the Giants’ usually dependable pen to shut down San Diego.
The pen couldn’t hold, though, and San Diego rallied for two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 4-3 lead. In that frame, Travis Jankowski doubled home Gyorko and Brett Wallace, making Benoit the pitcher of record and giving the Padres a shot to win the game with a strong ninth inning from Craig Kimbrel.
To lead off the ninth, though, Matt Kemp dropped a routine fly ball off the bat of Buster Posey, and Brandon Crawford’s double would put men on second and third and nobody out for the Giants to try and, again, re-take the lead.
The Giants would tie the game, when Kimbrel threw a wild pitch that scored Posey. But, other than that, Kimbrel worked out of the jam and the 4-4 game went into the bottom of the ninth inning.
In that frame, the Padres finally got the run to outlast the Giants, when Jedd Gyorko doubled home Kemp to seal the walk off win off Giants’ closer Santiago Casilla.
The two clubs will finish their series Thursday afternoon in San Diego.
